The coastal area is not the historic centre. Dinner on Corso Umberto or an evening walk in the upper town normally requires the cable car, a hotel shuttle, taxi or private transfer. The return journey matters particularly when you expect to dine in town several nights in a row.
Nor is the coast uniformly flat or quiet. Roads, beach clubs, steps, slopes and steep access paths shape individual properties differently. The phrase “near Isola Bella” says little about the effort required to reach the water until you have checked the actual pedestrian route.
Ask for precise information about access, distance from the cable-car station, parking and transfers. A property that appears close on a map may work poorly for reduced mobility, heavy luggage or a pushchair.
An independent stay near Isola Bella

The cable car between Taormina and Mazzaro
The Taormina–Mazzaro cable car is central to this decision. It connects the coastal area with the upper town and allows you to alternate between beach and centre without necessarily using a car. It should not, however, be treated as an instant connection available in identical conditions every day. Queues can form at busy times, and the walk from your accommodation to the station must still be included in the journey.
If you stay in Mazzaro and plan frequent dinners in the centre, check the evening service and your alternatives for returning. If you stay above and want to be on the beach every day, allow for the walk to the station, waiting time and the return climb. The cable car makes Taormina’s vertical geography manageable; it does not erase it.
Parking and travelling by car
A car does not automatically provide greater freedom in Taormina. In the historic centre it can become something to store rather than use, while parking conditions along the coast vary by property and season.
Before confirming your stay, ask whether parking is on site or elsewhere, whether it must be reserved, how luggage is handled and whether the route crosses a restricted-traffic area. Do not assume that “parking available” means you can drive directly to reception.
